Frequent QuestionsWho Can Dive?Children of any age can enroll in our diving classes as long as they can swim (or doggy paddle) one length across the width of the diving well unassisted. It is not necessary for a child to demonstrate any formal stroke or technique - they just need to be able to move through the water on their own. If you are unsure of your child's current swimming abilities, we'd be happy to evaluate them at the beginning of the first scheduled diving practice. The coach can then determine if your child may need to improve their water skills before enrolling in diving lessons.
How Are The Practices Organized?Divers starting out in the lesson program are evaluated and then placed in a class that fits the diver's needs and abilities. Currently, there are three options for diving instruction and they can be obtained on the Learn to Dive page. After a diver's initial registration on the team, any changes to a diver's class assignment will to be discussed with the coach in advance. The FAST Start Class is where most novice divers will begin. The Gold Team is available to those who have passed off all requirements according to the Gold Pass. The JO Team is by invitation only, as this is our nationally competitive team.
What Should I Expect At Practice?Divers will participate in dryland activities such as stretching, exercises, and dive specific skill training that will help prepare them for the skills they will learn in the water. A typical 1 hour practice may include 15-30 minutes of dryland training and 30-45 minutes of water training depending on what skills are being taught that day. Divers should be in their swim suits, ready for practice, and waiting in the bleachers with their parents before practice. To ensure everyone's safety, divers shall not be allowed on the pool deck until the coach invites them! Although parent attendance at practice is not required, parent's who choose to stay and watch are welcome to do so, but they must remain in the bleacher area.
What Should My Child Wear?Divers should wear attire that is meant for use in a pool. T-shirts, cut-off shorts, or any clothing that is not intended to be worn in a pool should be avoided. Boys may wear trunks, "jammers", or speedo type briefs. Girls may wish to think twice before wearing a 2-piece suit as diving is a very active sport. A one-piece suit is recommended. Also, divers should not wear goggles.
What About Competitions?Diving is a competitive sport and half the fun of learning new skills is being able to showcase them in a competitive atmosphere. FISHERS DIVING will periodically have meets for ALL lesson divers that will provide a fun, low-pressure way to experience diving competition in our own pool. Occasionally, we may have the opportunity to compete against other diving teams around the Indianapolis area. All divers in lessons and Gold Team will be encouraged to attend these meets that will be designed to allow divers to demonstrate their current skills. JO Team divers will travel and compete throughout the country at the Regional and National level as well as in various diving invitationals.
What Else Should I Know About Practices? While this is a positive training environment, there are a few rules of which parents and athletes need to be aware. Because our coaches are professionals within the field of diving, it is imperative that parents do not interfere with the coaching process. Please do not communicate with the divers OR the coach during practice. Communicating with or coaching your child during practice presents many safety concerns that the coach will explain at your first practice. All communication with the coach should take place outside of practice. Coaches contact information is listed on the About Us page.
What If We Need To Miss A Practice? While we want divers to have good attendance, we understand that sometimes missing practice is unavoidable. It is our policy that monthly training fees will NOT be pro-rated due to missed practices. Make-up classes will only be offered at the coach's discretion and must be arranged in advance.
When Are Monthly Payments Due?Your child's monthly training fee is due on the 1st of each month. If we have not received payment by a diver's first scheduled practice of the month, we will ask the diver to sit out of practice until payment is made. Please write your child's name in the memo section of each check. |
