The fun and excitement of candy, costumes, and DIVING was in the air this weekend for the Fishers Diving Tigers at the Annual Creepy Classic held at the IUPUI Natatorium! The 2nd place team finish for the Tigers says it all!! The Tigers stuffed their bags with 5 gold medals, 5 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, and a lot of memories of hot tub talk and synchro fun.

Annie Wiese (JO girls 12-13) and Shelby Bartlett (JO girls 16-18) had their brooms ready as they swept both 1 & 3 meter springboard events in their age groups along with newcomer, Lukas Wooster who lit the way for the Future Champions with his gold on 1 meter springboard in the FC 10-11 boys event. But the excitement didn't end there!! There was more precious metals hanging around than a pirate's treasure chest could hold with 6 team silver medals including: Blake Childress on 3 meter and Platform in the 12-13 JO boys events followed up with a bronze in the 1 meter event; Wiese snatched the silver on Platform and then Wiese and Childress snuck in the 12 & up Platform event outshining a plethora of teams to earn the Silver medal again!! Our next pirated silver medal came from Shane Heim who treated us with his newly acquired skills on 3 meter in the 14-15 JO boys event. ARGH! But wait! There's more!! Our little princess, Grace Mossing (JO girls 8-9) dazzled the judges with her baby blue eyes and beastly skills capturing the silver in the JO 1 meter event and Ashley Sinicropi(FC 10-11 girls) crept up the ladder in the Future Champions 1 meter to claim her silver! Chasing Ashley was Lucy Trede with a bronze to show for it. Wooster, like an eager tricker-treater also grabbed his bronze in the Future Champions 3 meter event and Bartlett took her bronze in the Platform event. Every single munchkin on the team came home with their heads held high and their love for diving shining bright! Congrats from the coaching staff to the entire team for a stunning success and thank you all for all the hard work that went into your diving to prepare for the meet!

The rest of our treasures lie below:

FHS Divers Make the Stand

Heading into the State Tournament, the Lady Tiger divers knew it was going to be a battle to make the Sectional and Regional cuts due to the fierce competition. Some of High School diving's biggest names were there for their own shot at the State Meet at the IUPUI Natatorium...from Olympian, Mary Beth Dunnichay, to Hamilton Southeastern's Courtney Wilder, Pendleton Heights' Hannah Cochran, former State Champion from Noblesville Katie Bittner and her newest teammate, Nationally ranked freshman, Meme Sharp. The lady tigers are not new to competition themselves with two Nationally ranked divers, Emily Holman and Shelby Bartlett (who's also All American). The third member of the Tiger trio is Bethany Jones, who after returning just 2 weeks prior to the start of the State Tournament from a fracture in a lower vertebrae last year was beat out by HSE's Wilder in the Sectional meet for the 4th place spot. However, with competition like this...the lady Tigers knew that anyone one of these girls had a shot at those spots.

It was a slightly missed entry for Tiger diver, Bethany Jones that put her in the 6th spot on the stands at Sectionals behind Wilder, who finished 5th missing her chance to move on as well. The top 4 divers after the finals were: Mary-Beth Dunnichay, Shelby Bartlett, Hannah Cochran, and Emily Holman. They turned up the heat at Regionals as Tiger divers: Bartlett and Holman switched spots on the stands, Personal Records were broken, they both proved that they were worthy of the Tiger State team as well as both being ranked in the top 5 at State. Holman turned in a power performance as she knocked out previous State Champ - Katie Bittner from the first round of diving and never looked back. "I didn't even know I'd gotten 2nd until Katie came over to congratulate me and I thought she had gotten the 2nd place spot", said Holman. Coach Kristy Ford commented,"The great thing about this team this year has been the ability of any one of the varsity to step up when the other one is having an off day. The girls have rotated around for the top spot all year. It's amazing to have so much talent on one team!"

With the competition at State being so intense the Lady Tigers must once again prove they have what it takes to make the stand and both say that's exactly what they intend to do.

The 2nd Annual Snowball Invite was held at the Fishers High School Natatorium on January 29, 2011. As the snow had mounted outside the pool doors, so too had the excitement of the Divers inside! The Tiger divers started off with 3rd (Fernanda Rios), 4th (Grace Mossing), and 5th (Kelly Hrinowich) places in the Girl's 11&under 1 meter competition. Competing for the first time in the 12-13 age group, ranked 31st in the Nation - Annie Wiese, finished 2nd behind WTRC's Claire Schuerman in the 12-13 Girl's 1 meter competition and 2nd on 3 meter falling just shy of the qualifying cut. Shelby Bartlett rounded out the Girl's 1 meter JO events for the Tigers with a score of 356.60 and a Gold medal as well as a 342.00 first place finish on 3 meter.

The sole Tiger diver on the Boy's side, 42nd Nationally ranked diver - Blake Childress, finished first on both 1 & 3 meter boards and qualified alongside Wiese (1 meter) and Bartlett (1 & 3 meter) for AAU National Competition in sunny Riverside, Calofornia in July. All of the fun & excitement didn't end there... The Tiger Novice divers held their heads high as they came with Gabriella "Ella" Desmarias, Isaac Desmarias, Rebecca Keys, Grace Mossing (3 meter), and Fernanda Rios (3 meter)! They ranged from 5 - 13 years old and competed between Future Champions Levels 1-7, however, the most exciting part was that for most of them this was their very first competition! Definitely a day to remember as all of them went home with medals jingling around their necks and most of them a shimmering gold!

A special congratulations to all the participants from our friends at WTRC (Cincinnati, OH) and our new friends at Boilermakers Dive Club (Lafayette, IN)!! We all had a great time getting to know all of you a bit better and look forward to seeing you soon!

One of the biggest meets of the year according to Tiger fans is the Mudsock showdown between the Fishers Tigers and the Southeastern Royals. On Tuesday night, the Fishers Natatorium filled up with fans in red and blue to watch the Swimming and Diving teams face off. The night began with fierce chants by both teams and ended with trophies being split between the two schools. The Lady Tigers were relentless in their efforts to obtain the coveted Mudsock trophy. Lady Tiger diver, Shelby Bartlett (Junior), dominated the boards scoring 254.25 points with a 29 point lead over Royals diver, Courtney Wilder, who scored 225.45 points, slipping into the 2nd place slot on her last dive by less than 4 points over Tiger Senior, Emily Holman. Holman finished with a score of 221.00. Bethany Jones finished 4th for the Tigers with a score of 211.15, a mere 34.45 points ahead of Royals' diver Taylor LeCount. The Tiger Diver's success didn't end there.

The Tiger divers did all they could for the boy's team as they swept Southeastern's boy divers Cody Coldren and Seth Winslow. The highlight of the meet was Matt Denkers' record setting performance scoring a 273.35 points to push past the current 6 dive pool record set last year by Tiger alumni, Alex Jones. Denkers was followed by teammate Spencer Roof, who also beat out the previous record scoring 249.40 points. Both Senior divers set personal best records at the meet and lead the way for teammate, Gabe Boris (sophomore) to pull ahead of Royals' diver, Cody Coldren, on his last dive by .35 points! While the battles raged with the swimming teams, the divers fought for success on the diving boards and the Tigers found what they were looking for...a new record, a sweep, and a chance to claim their victory over the Southeastern Royals for a trophy that has memories to last a lifetime.

Tiger Divers Have Reason to Celebrate on New Years Eve

Harrison High School hosted their first ever Raider Diving Invitational on December 31, 2010, at the Purdue Natatorium with 10 teams in attendance. The Fishers High School Tigers came into the meet with the knowledge that HSE's Courtney Wilder, West Lafayette's Caitlyn Sotelo, Lafayette Jeff's Dustin Miller, and Harrison's Layne Rogers would all be tough competition. As the Tigers walked out, they had reason to celebrate. Not only did all 6 of the Tiger divers make the finals, but the Lady Tigers: Shelby Bartlett, Emily Holman, and Bethany Jones, battled amongst each other for the top 3 spots. Bartlett came from over 20 points behind to take the lead after the final dive by 1.35 points to bump Senior teammate, Emily Holman, to a second place finish after leading the girls for the previous 10 dives. Jones moved from the 6th place spot behind HSE's Courtney Wilder and Burbuff's Emily Chase going into finals, up to finish ahead of both, as well as overtaking, West Lafayette's Caitlyn Sotelo on the last dive to a bronze finish. Meanwhile the Tigers: Matt Denkers and Gabe Boris set personal best records finishing 2nd, and 10th respectively. Spencer Roof defeated Valparaiso's Zachary Schwartz by .70 of a point to earn the 6th spot on the podium.

The Tiger divers finished up 2010 with reasons to celebrate their accomplishments so far this season...however, as Coach Kristy Ford commented, "I like to enjoy the moment, but I have a quote I often think of in this situation with Conference and the State Tournament coming up...'if you are still impressed with what you did yesterday, then you haven't done much today.' So, we will celebrate tonight and tomorrow go to work again." Tonight...they celebrate!

In the end, it all came down to the divers for the Lady Tigers to overtake the North Central Panthers who were 12 points ahead after the swimming events. Juniors, Shelby Bartlett and Bethany Jones, did their job on Wednesday to make up the difference taking first and second places in the diving event edging the Lady Tigers to the top spot by a few points at the North Central Invitational.

Jones led the meet after the first dive, but Bartlett overtook the lead after the second dive. Bartlett won with a 58 point lead scoring 259.30 points. "I wanted to PR today, but I was 11 points short. I had 2 or 3 dives where I could have made that up but missed the entry or came out a little sloppy. I have some work to do still", commented Bartlett. Jones grabbed the silver with 201.00 points followed by Allison Saylor, with 171.45 points. Coach Kristy Ford stated, "We finally had a couple of dives ready for this competition and I was pleased to see those dives go in for the scores they did. We have been focused on different aspects of our dives and the divers made the changes we have been working on. To me, it's all in the details. I was looking at this meet as a tool to see where we are and then figure out where we need to go with our practices over the next couple of weeks as we prepare for Conference and the State tournament. However, it was great to see the divers make the difference for the team as a whole. That's what High School Swimming & Diving is all about."

As the coaches stood around on deck after the final events waiting for the diving scores to be added to the tally, the anticipation of victory for either team was almost unbearable. When the final scores were posted, smiles on the Tiger coaches were from ear to ear. It wasn't about the swimmers or the divers...it was about teamwork!

The FHS Boys Swimming and Diving team made their way through the Invitational with their heads held high. With only 10 male swimmers on the Tiger team, they finished with 55 points after the swimming events. The Tiger divers, Matt Denkers, Spencer Roof, and Gabe Boris, added a few points of their own. Senior, Matt Denkers, squeaked out a first place finish ahead of North Central's Alex Olson by less than 3 points, finishing with a score of 255.20. "Matt was doing 2 new dives today for the first time. He stayed consistent and focused on what he needed to do and did it with 3 very good divers there to compete with", stated Coach Ford. Spencer Roof, also a Senior, finished with a score of 209.25 in third place and Gabe Boris, a Tiger sophomore, finished in 7th out of 13 with a score 159.70. The Tigers may not have the numbers that many of the other teams are privileged to have, but they sure make a mark wherever they go!

December 14, 2010

The Tiger Claw Invitational this past weekend proved that the Tiger Diving team was something to be reckoned with as the Tigers placed 7 out of 8 divers on the stands with competition from 9 schools and over 50 divers total. While Harrison's Layne Rogers was by far the excitement of the meet when he failed his last dive, still won by over 100 points, and set a new pool record; the Tiger team overall took the stage. The Boy's team fought and clawed their way to the 2nd, 4th, and 8th spots on the podium. Senior, Matt Denkers, came in with the top spot for the Tiger boys in 2nd place with a score of 418.80. Spencer Roof, Senior, hit his last dive to solidify his spot in 4th place with a score of 370.75, behind Josh Doggett of Anderson who ended with a score of 374.30. Pulling off 8th place was Gabe Boris, a Sophomore, who was beat out by a mere .55 points by Warren Central's James Fort.

The Lady Tigers lead the way taking the top 3 spots and adding the freshman, Chloe Jones to the roster in 6th place with a score of 276.25. Emily Holman, Senior, and Shelby Bartlett, Junior, battled it out for first and second places. In the end, it was a matter of 6's for Holman to take the gold with a score of 290.60. Bartlett followed closely behind with a score of 378.55 for the silver. Bethany Jones took the bronze with a score of 335.50. At the end of the day, it was an honor for the Tiger Diving team to be the only team with more than one of it's members place in the top 8 spots and a sea of red on the podium as the plethora of Tigers received their awards!

It's good to be a Tiger!

As the saying goes…"It's good to be a Tiger!" Tonight, the boy's and girl's diving teams showed both Westfield and Heritage Christian just what that means as the girl's swept the top 3 spots and the boy's took the top 2!

Tiger junior, Shelby Bartlett, dominated the girls from the first dive off the board as she calmly earned her way to an astounding personal best score of 270.20. "Shelby really stepped up to the plate tonight to prove she deserves to be ranked 3rd in the State. We have been focusing on positive thinking and I think the results of tonight's competition prove Einstein was spot on when he said, 'Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right!", commented Coach Kristy Ford. Shelby walked away from tonight all smiles and stated that her score, "kinda made me happy". Bartlett was followed by teammates, Bethany Jones, also a junior, with a score of 205.85 and Chloe Jones, a freshman, with a score of 175.50. Bethany Jones is making a strong comeback after suffering a stress fracture last October that kept her out of the water most of last season.

Matt Denkers, a Senior, left nothing behind as he clawed his way to a 122 point victory with a score of 277.65 towering over teammates, Gabe Boris, a sophomore, who ended his first competition of the season with a score of 155.90 and Galen Samples, a Senior; this being his very first diving meet obtained a 7th place finish with a score of 71.70. Denkers returned this season after taking a year off. "Having Matt back on the boards is a delight, and to coach someone so talented is an added treat", Coach Ford stated. "We have a strong team all around this season and I'm really excited to see what we can do with all of the experience and talent on the boards. Every day they push each other to be a little bit better than they were the day before and that makes for some exciting things going on."

Tonight the divers showed all the fans that it truly is as the saying goes…"Good to be a Tiger!"

Also diving for the Tigers this season are: Spencer Roof, Senior; Stirling Fordham, Freshman, Emily Holman, Senior, and Siara Wolf, Freshman.

After a year under new Head Coach, Kristy Ford, the Tiger divers have a lot to look back on. “I couldn’t have dreamed of much more” says Ford. “When I started a year ago at Fishers, there were 8 divers total. The program has grown so much! Not to mention, I never thought I would have taken 5 divers to Nationals between USA Diving’s Speedo Junior & Age Group Nationals, and AAU Nationals. The year was filled with success after success and we have no intention of stopping what we’ve started!”

Annie Wiese, led her teammates as the sole Tiger to qualify for USA Diving’s AT&T/Speedo Junior Nationals. To qualify for AT&T/Speedo Junior Nationals a diver must earn a top 16 spot at the USA Diving Regional Qualifying Meet, then go on to earn a top 6 spot in a USA Diving Zone Qualifying Meet. She earned her place as she finished 4th on 1 meter and 3rd on 3 meter and 3rd place on 5 meter Platform at Zones. She competed in both springboard events in Tucson, AZ. Wiese placed 30th on both 1 and 3 meter boards earning her a spot with the elite divers in the Nation. Wiese was forced to scratch her platform event due to a minor injury during the first day of warm ups. Coach Kristy Ford remarked, “It’s quite impressive when you consider she’s only been diving for 9 months. She’s such a pleasure to have around the pool and the team. Annie has an awesome attitude at practice and strong leadership skills for an 11 year old!”

Shelby Bartlett, who finished tenth as a sophomore for Fishers High School at the IHSAA State Meet this February, competed over the summer through the club program, finishing off with a 12th place finish on 3 meter and a 17th place finish on 1 meter in the Girls 17 yr. age group at the AAU Diving Nationals in Coral Springs, FL in August. “I got off to a rough start at the beginning of the summer at Regionals. I think it was nerves. But I had already qualified for AAU Diving Nationals in August, so I had something to work toward. I worked hard the rest of the summer to make up for my performance at Regionals”, recalled Bartlett. “Shelby works harder than anyone in the club, she’s usually the first to practice and the last to leave; which says something about her desire to be one of the best.” commented Ford.

She was joined by teammate, Meme Sharp, who will be diving for Noblesville High School this year as a freshman. Sharp joined the Tigers in May, just prior to the start of the summer season. “She came in with a strong 1 meter list, but she hadn’t spent much time on 3 meter to develop her list up there. We worked hard throughout the summer to get her in a position she could compete on 3 meter. I think it really paid off for her”, observed Ford. Sharp attended both USA Diving’s Age Group Nationals in Tucson, AZ, and AAU Diving Nationals in Coral Springs, FL. She placed 22nd on 3 meter and 14th on 1 meter in the Girls 14-15 year old age group at USA Diving’s Age Group Nationals; then picked up the pace in Florida at AAU Diving Nationals where she placed 6th on 3 meter and 3rd on 1 meter in the 14 year old age group; earning her All-American status on both boards.

She wasn’t alone though, Blake Childress, competed at USA Diving’s Age Group Nationals while dealing with an injury. Ford stated, “Things like this either make or break a diver. In Blake’s case, it made him realize that he’s tougher than most.” It didn’t seem to faze him in the least as he went on to compete on both boards and medaled in 12th place on 1 and 3 meter in the Boys12-13 yr. old age group. Coach Ford admits, “The team has a long way to go to really be taken seriously.” “We already have goals and a plan to get us headed in that direction. I’m really excited to see what this year will bring! Right now, it’s time to get focused on preparing for what lies ahead. With some determination and hard work, I think we can accomplish our goals as a team.”

Most of us would say that success is measured by the ability to obtain our goals. For the Tiger Diving Team, those goals were not only reached but surpassed. It has given them a year to look back on with smiles and a hope for the future of Tiger Diving!

January 10, 2010

The Tiger divers established themselves in the HCC Conference as Gail Susdorf dominated the boards and Alex Jones rallied to both take home the HCC Conference Diving titles! Gail Susdorf won the Girls' HCC diving title with a score of 477.85. From the first dive off the board, Gail took the lead and she didn't look back as she beat last year's State Champion from Noblesville, Katie Bittner; who trailed in 2nd by over 50 points to finish with a 426.65. The Tiger sophomore, Shelby Bartlett, moved up two spots this year as she took home 4th place with a score of 393.15 trailing Noblesville Senior, Meghan Potee, who finished 3rd with a score of 415.60.

The Tiger boys balanced the girls as Alex Jones, after trailing both Layne Rogers and Spencer Roof by a couple of points in the 8th round, came back with a vengeance to take the HCC diving title with a personal best score of 408.10. Jones nailed his last 3 dives to take the lead over Harrison's, Layne Rogers, who had lead the entire meet up until the 9th round of diving. Spencer Roof brought home 3rd place for the Tigers, finishing with a personal best score of 370.80 beating out Lafayette Jeff's, Dustin Miller by 48.70 points and Hamilton Southeastern's, Michael Dorman, who wrapped up the meet with a score of 321.65. Gabe Boris, the Tiger freshman, broke onto the HCC diving scene with a 12th place finish and a personal best score of 264.95. There wasn't a question today whether the Tiger divers have what it takes to be champions! They all came out with fire in their eyes and determination written on their faces...they came home with #1 stamped in the history books.
